Starting 14th August 2023 Stagecoach added some extra trips on the local buses - the 95, X58 and X61 - which may help in getting back to Crail after a late evening out.
The extra timetables may look slightly confusing, but the services are actually run by just two buses by adding extra trips at the end of their normal 95 routes...
Most useful is probably the 95 that departs from St Andrews Bus Station at 00:35 passing through Crail High Street at 01:00 and terminating at Anstruther Harbour at 01:12. The same bus started out from Leven at 23:20 on Monday to Saturday evenings - before the recent timetable change it used to finish its journey at 00:10 at Toll Road, Cellardyke. This bus now changes its route number to an X61 and turns left at the top of Toll Road, then right at the mini-roundabout by CarpetSunLimited onto St Andrews Road and carries on to St Andrews Bus Station arriving at 00:30 where it becomes the 00:35 95 to Crail and Anstruther...
This can be quite a useful bus for getting back to Crail - you can catch it in Leven at 23:20 and stay on throughout its circuitous route - or pick it up anywhere in between - perhaps at 00:05 at Anstruther Harbour or at 00:35 in St Andrews after an event there?
The 00:35 from St Andrews means that it is now possible to get to Crail from Edinburgh departing as late as 21:30 on an X59A which with a change in Glenrothes gets into St Andrews before midnight.
From Glasgow depart as late as 20:15 on an X27 connecting with the 95 in Leven.
Or from Dundee Railway Station there's a 99 at 23:28 that departs Dundee Bus Station at 23:42 or Leuchars Railway Station at 00:01 and gets to St Andrews Bus Station at 00:13 which should also connect with this late 95 service.
The second bus that is running services later than before is the 95 that arrives in St Andrews at 23:45. On Monday to Saturday this bus turns into an X58 and departs at 23:50 arriving in Leven at 00:25. And following the arrival of trains at Leven, there is now a 95 departing Leven at 00:25 which gets to Cellardyke at 01:15 - which would help you get to places between Upper Largo and Cellardyke.
On Sunday evenings Stagecoach are running one extra service with the new timetable change - the 95 described above that on Monday to Saturday arrives in St Andrews at 23:45 doesn't arrive until midnight when it turns around and departs as a 95 at 00:05 getting to Crail High Street at 00:30 - this bus continues all the way to Leven arriving at 01:30.
This could be useful for getting back to Crail if you are out late on Sunday in St Andrews.
If you don't have a bus pass and get free travel it's worth knowing about the Stagecoach Nightrider ticket which gives you travel on Stagecoach buses across Fife, Perthshire, Dundee and Angus between 6pm and 4am for just £3.70 (from 27th April 2025).
