Day Trips to Crail

Day trips to Crail generally end up on the 95 bus

You can join the 95 at St Andrews or Leven - or maybe even Anstruther.

The 95 runs approximately hourly, but there are differences on schooldays, so it's always worth checking that the 95 runs when you want it to:

Here are some thoughts about how you might get to Crail from various places...

Edinburgh - so popular that we have written some special "crib sheets" on catching the bus from Edinburgh - there are plenty of buses from Edinburgh and starting early at 06:50 or 06:55 means you can get to Crail for around 09:55. The last bus back to Edinburgh departs Crail at 20:15 or 20:19 - there is often a choice of going via St Andrews or via Leven with similar travel times.

Glasgow - again we have produced some "crib sheets" with suggested connections. An 06:45 departure from Glasgow will get you to Crail for 10:55. The last bus back to Glasgow leaves Crail at 18:49. Travel is generally via St Andrews.

Dunfermline - is on the route to Glasgow - you can use the guidance from our Glasgow "crib sheets". The first bus to Crail is an X24 at 07:59 from Dunfermline.

Stirling - this page is about using the Stagecoach East Scotland Express buses such as the X22 - the first weekday X22 departs Stirling at 08:00 and gets to Dunfermline at 08:54 where an X24 at 08:59 will take you to St Andrews for 10:30 - time for a morning coffee before catching the 95 at 11:25 getting to Crail around 11:55. The last bus back from Crail on this route is the 95 at 14:49 which gets to St Andrews at 15:21 for the X24 at 15:40 getting to Dunfermline at 17:15 for the X22 at 17:30 and arrival back in Stirling at 18:24.

Other routes between Stirling and St Andrews are available by changing buses either in Dundee or at Forth Valley Royal Hospital - these routes run earlier and later but will generally cost more as they use buses from other operators - either Megabus or McGill's - in addition to Stagecoach East Scotland.

All the day trips on this page can be done using a Stagecoach East Scotland Dayrider ticket costing £11.50

Perth - the new Stagecoach 65 service between St Andrews and Perth makes for an easy day trip. The 65 to catch is probably the 07:08 from Scott Street as the bus starts from Perth Royal Infirmary on weekdays. This bus gets to St Andrews at 08:25 and on weekdays the 95 doesn't depart until 08:35, getting you to Crail around 09:05. Later buses tend to arrive in St Andrews at 25 minutes past the hour - the same time as the 95 is due to depart - the 95 is often running a few minutes late - but then so is the 65 - so you may just miss the bus and end up with nearly an hour to wait in St Andrews (it's a good job there are plenty of coffee shops in St Andrews). Buses in the opposite direction tend to connect better, with buses from Crail at 16:49 and 17:49 perhaps being the sensible last choices getting to St Andrews at 17:21 and 18:21 for the 65 at 17:45 or 18:45, with arrival in Perth at 19:07 or 20:07. There are later buses, particularly on Friday and Saturday nights, but they involve more waiting around and perhaps catching a Moffat & Williamson M65 from behind the bus station in St Andrews and changing buses in Newburgh - as a special arrangement, organised by Fife Council, Stagecoach tickets are accepted on the Moffat & Williamson M65 (and M36) buses.

Dundee - the 99 service between St Andrews and Dundee is so frequent that it's really easy to just hop from the 95 to the 99 at almost any time of day. It is worth allowing plenty of time for delays over the Tay Bridge or in pop-up roadworks around Leuchars or Guardbridge. Especially if your travel is intended to get you to a timed appointment. The last sensible bus back from Crail is at 22:19 getting to St Andrews at 22:45 for the 99 at 23:00 and arrival back in Dundee around 23:30.

Montrose and Stonehaven - changing at Dundee with the X7 will get you from various East Coast towns including Montrose and Stonehaven. An example journey would be to take the X7 from Stonehaven at 08:50, Montrose at 09:37 getting to Dundee at 10:39. You should be able to catch a 99 at 10:48 or sooner, getting to St Andrews at 11:19 for the 95 at 11:25 getting to Crail around 11:55. The last sensible bus back from Crail might be the 95 at 16:49 getting to St Andrews at 17:21 for a 99 at 17:28 getting to Dundee at 18:04 for the X7 at 18:10 getting to Montrose at 19:18 and Stonehaven at 20:03. (If you miss this connection you might be 2 hours later in Stonehaven.)
