Stagecoach have details of all their services over the Festive Period from 24th December 2024 to 3rd January 2025 at: https://www.stagecoachbus.com/service-updates/serviceupdatesarticle?SituationId=ID-15/11/2024-11:53:18:455
On Thursday 26th December 2024 and Thursday 2nd January 2025 Stagecoach are running a very limited bus service - loosely based on their normal Sunday service - but starting late and finishing early evening.
You can still manage a day trip to do some shopping as far away as Glasgow or Edinburgh - or get in a day trip from such places to Crail by bus.
Here are some thoughts of trips you could make.
The first bus through Crail is a 95 at 09:03 which gets you to Leven at 10:07.
Just 3 minutes later at 10:10 the last direct X27 departs from Leven calling at Kirkcaldy at 10:38, at Chapel Level Roundabout (for Fife Central Retail Park) at 11:03, Dunfermline at 11:44, Kincardine at 12:11 and Glasgow at 13:00.
Or, an X61 at 10:20 from Leven will get you to Edinburgh at 12:05.
Note that if you missed the connection with the X27, the X61 gets to Halbeath Park & Ride sooner than that X27 - because the X27 goes via Victoria Hospital & Cowdenbeath - so you should be able to pick up the X27 at Halbeath and still get to Glasgow for 13:00. (X27 towards Glasgow gets to Halbeath Park & Ride at 23 minutes pas the hour and departs at 28 minutes past the hour - X61 towards Edinburgh gets to Halbeath Park & Ride at 18 minutes past the hour and departs at 20 past the hour.)
You can also get to these destinations an hour earlier if you can get to Anstruther Harbour for a 95 departing at 08:08.
The last buses back in the opposite direction are:
From Edinburgh an X61 at 16:15 will get you to Leven at 17:58 connecting with the 95 at 18:20 getting to Crail at 19:19.
From Glasgow an X27 departing at 15:15 calls at Kincardine at 16:04, Dunfermline at 16:30, Chapel Level Roundabout at 17:10, arriving at Kirkcaldy at 17:25. This year this bus does not go through to Leven and you may be best changing at Halbeath Park and Ride where the X27 arrives at 16:47 changing to the X61 departing at 17:02, passing through Kirkcaldy Bus Station at 17:28 and getting to Leven at 17:58 for the 18:20 95 and arrival in Crail at 19:19.
This is the first year that the X61 service between St Andrews and Edinburgh via Anstruther and Halbeath Park and Ride is running over the Festive Period and you may find its journeys useful for getting to and from Anstruther and other places in the East Neuk and for providing connections between Leven and Halbeath:
Northbound you might consider a trip to Dundee for the Sales instead?
The earliest northbound bus you can get to Dundee from Crail is the 95 at 10:20 getting to St Andrews at 10:50. A 99 at 11:05 will get you to Dundee Bus Station for 11:41.
The last sensible return journey on the 99 is probably the 15:33 from Dundee Railway Station - 15:48 at Dundee Bus Station getting to St Andrews at 16:11 to catch the 95 at 16:35 from St Andrews which is the last bus to Crail in this direction, arriving in Crail at 17:03.
This year you can get to Dundee earlier and travel back later by going via Anstruther using the X61:
If you take the 95 at 09:03 from Crail and get off at Anstruther Harbour at 09:17, wait at the same stop for the X61 at 09:45 which gets to St Andrews at 10:05. You probably just miss a 99 departing at 10:05 and have to wait for the 99 at 10:35 getting to Dundee Rail Station at 11:03 and Dundee Bus Station at 11:11.
On the return journey the last bus back to Crail via Anstruther that makes sure to allow time for late running buses and connection problems is to catch the 17:03 from Dundee Rail Station, 17:18 from Dundee Bus Station, getting to St Andrews at 17:49 for the X61 at 18:20 getting to Anstruther Harbour at 18:40. Wait at the same stop for the 95 at 19:05 getting to Crail at 19:19.
